Along with colleagues from the Marine Biological Laboratory, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Auburn University team led by Dr. Hanqin Tian found that 50% reduction in the amount of nitrogen fertilizer in certain areas of China would substantially decrease greenhouse gas emissions without substantial impact on crop yield.
The study, “Food benefit and climate warming potential of nitrogen fertilizer uses in China“, was published November 1, 2012 in Environmental Research Letters.
